Lincoln navigators have used a different algorithm than other apps, researchers find
LISBON — The health navigator app that is available for use on the Apple Watch is based on a “generic” algorithm and is prone to error, researchers have found.
The app’s use of a “bulk-import” approach, in which multiple navigators are sent a single URL that is matched to an image, is an example of an algorithm that is used on other apps and services that can be misleading, according to the researchers at IBM Watson and Google.
“This is a problem for many health navigators, but the problem is exacerbated when they are using a generic algorithm, which is not a good thing,” said researcher Michael J. Schaeffer, who led the research.
“This generic algorithm can be a very useful tool, but it can also be harmful.”
The researchers looked at the health navigating apps available on the iOS App Store, the Google Play Store and the Apple Store and compared the results to the apps they tested.
They found that the navigator was not able to match images to an accurate medical map and that its performance varied depending on how it was used.
For example, one app, Linguistic, was able to accurately match images of a doctor’s hand to a map of the United States.
However, other navigators were unable to accurately map an individual’s location to a physical location and the app did not match the location of a specific hospital.
“This algorithm may be a useful tool for certain types of apps,” Schaeff said.
“But in practice, it can make it hard for a navigator to find information on the ground and get that information to their users.”
“We are not saying it’s a bad thing.
But if navigators need to be able to get to a specific location without having to get a map, then they are going to be less likely to use this type of app,” he said.
While the app has been around for more than two years, Schaeffen said the research is a significant development in the search technology space.

According to Schaefer, the navigators he studied had to use their own algorithms and did not have access to the latest technologies to make the apps work.”
